SCOTT "BLUE" BERNSTEIN, PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER,
THE REAL BOTTLENECKING COMPANY
...The company was founded in 1985 by Alabama bluesman Scott "Blue" Bernstein, who originated the Pyex re-creation of the Coricidin Cough & Cold Medicine bottle after glass Coricidin® bottles were banned under Federal child-proofing regulations. The original Coricidin Guitar Slide is marketed nationwide and in 40 countries around the globe by The Real Bottlenecking Company, the marketing arm of Planet Blue Productions.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Scott studied jazz guitar at Monterey Peninsula College, and was later awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where, in his junior year, he earned the position in the Berklee Studio Band formerly held by Kevin Eubanks, now leader of the band on The Tonight Show, starring Jay Leno. While at Berklee, Scott studied and performed with many legendary musicians, including Victor Bailey of Weather Report; renowned jazz fusion guitarist Mike Stern; legendary bassist Jeff Berlin, and famous composer/trumpeter Toru "Tiger" Okoshi, and with the Ron Levy Bluesman Band, fronted by B.B. King's piano player of 15 years.
In 1984, as a Muscle Shoals Sound Studio guitarist, Scott began performing with Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmie Johnson, the original Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, the world-renowned musicians and producers who have played on over 500 LPs and garnered over 75 gold and platinum LPs for such classics as "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett, "High Time We Went" by Joe Cocker, "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon, "I'll Take You There" by The Staple Singers, "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger, "Tightrope" by Leon Russell, "Tonight's The Night" by Rod Stewart, as well as their work with R.B. Greaves, Bobby Womack, Mel and Tim, Traffic, Millie Jackson, Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton, Jimmy Buffett, Dr. Hook, Oak Ridge Boys, Glen Frey, Cher, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, Art Garfunkel, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and many others.
Scott has also performed with legendary jazz organist Richard "Groove" Holmes, Eddie Kendrick, The Temptations, Anita Baker, The Chi-Lites, Candi Staton, Steve Fisher of Van Morrison, and most recently with Wynton Marsalis.
Now living in Birmingham, Alabama, Scott performs locally with Cleve Eaton, Ray Reach and Ona Watson, owner of Ona's Music Room -- voted one of the 10 Best Places to enjoy jazz in the United States.
Through his production company, Planet Blue Productions, Scott provides multiple services, including songwriting, custom jingles, club dates, performance contracts, and personal instruction. The jingle for Southeastern Meats, one of hundreds of commercial jingles written, played and produced by Scott over the years, has now run for almost 20 years, making it among the longest-running in Alabama commercial history.
Scott is a professor of music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and also teaches "Blues in the Schools" through The Alabama School of Fine Arts and Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, along with classes at U.S. Steel, Bailey Brothers Music, Mars Music and Nuncie's Music Company.
