Bio:  The Shadows were a local Northport , AL band that played and performed from 1964-1967. The band members consisted of FRANK CANNON- lead guitar, JACK BIGHAM-rythym guitar, STANLEY FOWLER-bass guitar, ROGER YOUNG-organ, DONNIE WALKER-drums, MIKE THORNTON- singer, and the late CURTIS GOODMAN-singer.. The bands first big accomplishment was in 1964 when the band members were in the 8th grade and won a local talent contest at Northport Jr. High. While in the 9th grade at Northport Jr. High, the band was asked to come and play in front of the entire student body in the gymnasium at Tuscaloosa County High, in which they did and had a blast. The Shadows played a lot of private parties and events in cities throughout the state, playing at dance halls in Gordo, Centerville, Uniontown, Jasper, Fayette Livingston, and Columbus, Ms. People will most likely remember the band from setting up and playing at the Northport Community Center on Friday nights after all the home Tuscaloosa County High Wildcats football games. The crowds were always overflowing to capacity and everybody had a good time. The Shadows played locally a couple of times on WVUA for the UCP Marathon, Channel 6 WBRC Tom York Show on Sunday mornings, and WVOK radio station on the Joe Ruemore show. They also played at several fraternity houses at the University of Alabama, Holiday Beach and the VFW Club. The band went on to enter and play in the “Battle of the Bands,” at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham and the “Battle of the Bands” in Tuscaloosa at the old National Guard Armory.

the shadows todayThe Shadows ventured to Nashville TN and recorded a record, “IF YOU LOVE ME” in which they gave to some of their local fans. The record was also played on WTBC by Tiger Jack and WJRD by the late Ken Pritchett. Overall, the Shadows just had a lot of fun and hopefully helped everyone else have a lot also.

Dennis Hambright has asked the band if they would try to get back together and play at The TCHS annual “Sock-Hop” in the spring at the old TCHS gym. The Alumni Association wants to turn back the hands of time and play some real oldies songs played in the “GOOD OLD DAYS.”  Did it work? Yes, over 750 people came out to hear us play. Thank you all for coming. We are planning to be around for a while. If you did not make it to the Sock Hop, try to make it to another gig that we have scheduled.
